National SVA History: From Grassroots to National Movement
Following the Vietnam War, local student veteran groups, like those at Northern Illinois University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, continued to support veterans returning to campus. However, after the September 11, 2001, attacks and the return of OEF and OIF veterans, it became clear that campuses needed more dedicated support.
In 2008, student veterans formalized this grassroots movement and **Student Veterans of America (SVA) was officially incorporated**. This coincided with tireless advocacy that resulted in the signing of the **Post 9/11 G.I. Bill** into law six months later.
Since its founding, SVA has grown to include over 1,500 chapters, supporting over one million veterans pursuing postsecondary education using VA benefits.
